Most of us have an implicit belief that every thought passing our mind belongs to us. Most people never even think of the possibility that our thoughts may not be ours. But if it’s not yours, then who do they belong to?
Is thought a function of the mind? The ancient Egyptians believed that thought was a sense. If that is the case, then as with other senses, thought is simply a receptor for data. Except, unlike vision and sound, thought picks up information and translates it into something intelligible that our mind can interpret.
This does not mean that every thought is received from the outside. Especially nowadays, with many people suffering from overthinking caused by anxiety and stress, most of these types of thoughts are very likely generated by the brain of the person. Thoughts could also be an interpretation of signals from different organs in the body.
But for those who meditate, have dabbled in psychedelics, or the psychic and spiritual realms — doesn’t it feel obvious to ask the question — are we the owners of every thought that passes through our mind?
Isn’t there even the tiniest chance that the golden insights and strange other-worldly thoughts are perhaps coming from other worlds that we may not have comprehended until now?
